GARO - Yami o Terasu Mono Episode 1 Review

We start off as we have with the past two seasons. Zaruba, Garo's magical talking ring doing a brief explanation about how Knights hunt things called Horrors. And we go into the opening song.

The show's main protagonist, Ryuga Dogai, played by Wataru Kuriyama, explains how the Makai Knight Garo armor doesn't have a master and how it's lost it's shine, which is why it's mostly a silver than a gold and how he basically was given the armor I'm assuming until the master of the armor steps up.

We start off with Ryuga stabbing a bride in the chest with his sword in front of the wedding reception. He chases her around the room, all while she's trying to fend him off. Someone tries to protect her, but Ryuga tosses him to the side. After a short chase, Ryuga grabs the bride and flies with her out of a window. From the room, we see a flash of red, then a flash of gold and a scream. Next we cut to Ryuga sheathing his sword as the bride's bouquet drops. As he walks away, three men in trench coats step out from a distance facing away from the camera.

We see a helicopter view of the city, Vol City and police scanners talking about Ryuga's escapade at the wedding and is quickly tracked down by the city's police force called SG-1 (Of course, I didn't see Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks or Ben Browder, so I'm calling BS on that one.)

He spends the next three minutes fighting them off jumping from roof to roof until he comes across a lone solider. After some evasions, he's shocked to find out that the soldier is a female. He jumps to the next roof and she begins firing at him.

He takes cover, and one of her bullets hits Zaruba. He then jumps off the roof and onto a passing box truck, waving goodbye to the soldiers. Ryuga finds a way to a bench and lays down, saying sorry to Zaruba for getting him shot. Zaruba seeming mad at him. He looks up in the sky as a 3 sided holographic screen pops up, giving the city their news for the day and saying that it was a normal quiet day. Ryuga wonders why his attack didn't make the news.

We cut to a flashback of 12 hours ago, where Ryuga says he came to Vol City on orders. He explains how he has no one that cares for him and he freelances in cities, hunting down their horrors. Vol City is an independent city with their own specialized police force. At the cities checkpoint, Ryuga manages to slip past the guards and makes his way into the city. A montage of Ryuga exploring the city begins to play as he passes by a school and juggles with a clown and apparently steals food from the elderly.

Ryuga comes across a huge angelic like statue and puts his ear to one of it's bases. A girl walks up to him and asks him whats wrong and explains that the statue and the city is crying. The girl hands him a handkerchief and she's on her way.

Ryuga notices a wedding party, the bride being the lady from the beginning of the episode. A flower petal from her bouquet flies in front of him and catches it. He puts the petal up this ear and begins to hear voices, finding out that the bride is a Horror. We cut to the bride's dressing room, where Ryuga creeps up on her while she's looking in a mirror and grabs her and does that awesome green flame to the eyes trick that shows that she's a horror. She throws him off of her and he manages to sit down on the couch, pulling out his sword.

The horror asks why a Makai Knight is in the city, and Ryuga just responds with him not understanding what she's saying, due to him being rusty on the Makai language. She begins to attack him and the two fight through the halls of the floor, the horror shooting out magic balls of stuff from her bouquet.

Ryuga knocks her to the ground and she begins to crawl to the door of the reception, saying that she's going to get the people to help her. Ryuga doesn't care and stabs her, then throws her into the reception hall. We come back to where we were at the start of the episode, only this time when Ryuga throws her out of the window, we get a slow motion shot of the two falling.

Ryuga summons his armor as they fall. The Horror shoots more balls, to which Ryuga cuts with his sword and then disposes of the horror mid-air 10 feet above the ground. We cut back to Ryuga lying on the bench, wondering why the horror didn't eat the people. The Bride's bouquet pops up and begins to attack Ryuga, showing itself as the true body of the Horror.

The Horror then gets taken down by what appears to be a more advanced form of a Gouryu from previous season, named Lago. The Gouryu returns to it's master, a Makai Priest with a whip at the end of his brush, and orders Lago to finish off the horror.

He opens his coat and Lago disappears with in it. Two more men pop out of nowhere and begin to question his skills and abilities. They introduce themselves as Jakuzure Takeru and Kusugami Aguri and reveal themselves to also be Makai Knights.

Ryuga approaches the Makai Priest, Burai and presents his orders asking if he was the one who sent them. The priest acknowledges that he sent them and Ryuga declines them. Burai tells him that it's his duty as GARO to save the city and the episodes ends with Ryuga looking at the three.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this to be a great start for the new series. I'm glad that we're separating from Kouga. His story has been done. He ends up with Karou and they live happily ever after. Or so, that's what I want to believe. We haven't seen much of Ryuga's personality, so I can't really tell how I feel about him yet. He seems like he doesn't want to be Garo. That or he knows he's just the fill-in Garo until its true wearer pops up. I'm not going to be surprised at all when Ryuga does become full Garo. I can see it now. Last episode. Final Battle. He looks at his sword, it's all red. He does his transform and the full goldness of the armor is shining.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about introducing the other two Makai Knights this early into the series. We didn't see Rei til about episode 12ish of Season 1 and Season 2, we didn't see consistently see Baron until mid-season. I can see adding one now, and one later on, but two at the same time I feel ruins some feel for me. I love the feeling of watching a toku and seeing a new hero arise. I get chills through my body. This just kinda took it away from me. Who knows. We may see more knights later on.

I can tell that Ryuga and the soldier lady are going to have a consistent back and forth this season, which I always tend to like. The hero and a member of the good team trying to bring them down having nice chats before the hero gets away.

The bride/horror at one point said "What are Makai Knights doing in this city?" which makes me wonder if the city is filled with these horrors and they have an agreement to let them control the city and not spread out into the real world, which would explain why Vol City is so cut off and why Ryuga had to sneak into the city.

Also, the 8 minute fight scene was fun.

All in all, I think this was a good first episode. Introduce Ryuga, make him a likeable guy and show his relationship with Zaruba and his fighting style. I'm actually excited for this series. :D
